Guided by the philosophy of its founder, Mr. J N Tata, Tata power as an institution has always been involved in the process of nation building. There are several factors which influence the kind of decisions made by the company over the years. Primary among them is the idea of being the pioneers. Right from the inception of the company, there have been additions in terms of technical advancements which have led to advancements in the entire energy sector in the country. With its legacy as a nation-builder, Tata Power has gone beyond just the generation of power. It has worked to empower people through skill development. All across the country, an increasing number of people are taking charge of their destinies and earning better livelihoods through professional training, millions of young students and youth have been educated on conservation of resources and other professional skills enabling them to become a proud member of the society by realizing their full potential.
Some of the noteworthy initiatives in this regard are:
With the government's impetus to catalyze the growth of the power sector in the country the corporate houses active in the sector have started aggressively foraying the business. This impetus in turn creates a demand for the skilled workers who would operate these new and upcoming power plants in the country. Tata Power being the torch bearer of the vision to provide power to everybody in the country wanted to pitch-in to plug this gap of skilled workforce. Hence, the Tata Power Skill Development Institute was incubated. This institute aims at training the young and eligible population of the country to be able to work in these power plants. A full-fledged curriculum has been designed to impart not just education but complete hands-on training to the people enrolled in the course. In addition to the technical training the institute ingrains the philosophy of all-round development by including various interpersonal skill development programs in its courseware.
In its vision statement TPSDI states that it is to become the institute of choice for training and certification in power sector skills. With this vision, the institute aims to train over 200,000 people by 2025 by having centers abroad and collaborating government bodies and vocational training institutes at various locations.
The Strategic Engineering Division of Tata Power is the arm which is involved in developing defense equipment for the country and hence, strengthening the borders against possible threats. Based out of Bangalore, this division has been the backbone of various missile launching technologies and has developed some of the country's finest armaments. Being an integral part of the country's defense forces is a matter or great pride and honor which is ingrained in the traits of the company.
Resource management is one of the company's strengths. Believing in the dictum, "Have purpose, means will follow," the company has never allowed lack of resources to deter it from taking technology to the length and breadth of the country. The ideology of the company has always been one of a partner to the cause of Nation Building and it would continue to do so for the times to come.
Employees are our greatest assets. The Tata philosophy has always laid emphasis on care for people and our employees are the ones who create the company so their care is of the prime importance. Several facilities which are ingrained as practice for the employees' benefits have become standard industry norms. Healthcare facilities, recreational facilities, holiday homes for the employees, behavioral interventions like LEHAR, LASER, long service awards etc. are a few examples of the same. Apart from these, for a holistic development of the employees, the company encourages them to volunteer their time and talent for the betterment of society. The well-run volunteering programs across the company benefit the lesser privileged people in the society and help the employees to become compassionate, socially responsible and satisfied individuals.
How these initiatives aim to improve our employees as individuals and be able to achieve their full potential deserves a mention in this context.
SRIJAN
Srijan literally means 'creation' in the Hindi language. In a first of its kind initiative Tata Power invited its employees to come and participate in the creation of its human resource policies to encourage inclusiveness across the group. A company which has so much diversity in terms of location, ethnicity, language and culture can't simply have uniform policies for all of its employees. Hence, to include ideas which have been generated out of experience, cultural differences, geographical diversities etc., the company decided to create an open forum for each and every employee to participate in this biggest ever initiative.
Needless to say that the enthusiasm was enormous and the response overwhelming. The employees posted at far flung locations could contribute and help in this co-creation exercise. A well-defined system was introduced to make the process smooth and effective.
This is just one of the many examples which make it an organization which is constantly looking out for ways to satisfy its people and be the organization of choice to work for.
LEHAR
It is one of the various activities which aim at focusing on the areas which would help an employee develop as a person. Participative training sessions with external experts make it an enriching experience for people of the organization. It combines a series of inbound and outbound activities to make it a complete and fulfilling exercise breaking away the monotony of daily life.
These kind of behavioral interventions are a rarity in today's corporate world which aims towards higher quarterly profits and operational efficiencies only.
Long Service Awards
Loyalty in the Tata Power is not just of the employee but also of the family and in a majority of the cases it runs so deep that the family itself is married to the company. There are quite a few families who have been associated directly with Tata Power wherein people from over three to four generations have been in the employment of the company.
Its values and commitment to ensure that not just the employee but also the employee's family members are taken care of have been so strong that it becomes almost imperative for the next generations to join the company. To honor this tradition and to continue the association of the company and the families Tata Power rewards its employees who have served for several years through the Long Service Awards initiative.
It is said that loyalty is a two way street and the company ensures it has travelled its distance when the employee has travelled the remaining bit.
A sound mind resides in a sound body has been the philosophy of the Tatas since the very beginning of their business endeavours. Our founder Mr. J. N. In its initial days the club put a lot of emphasis on sports such as cricket, billiards, tennis, table tennis, chess, carom etc. The club paved the way for the Tata Sports Club which was formed later in 1937. So, in a way the Tata Hydro Sports Club can be credited to lead the entire Tata Group to embrace sports and to work for its development.
Later on as the organization grew and so did the number of people, a new club called the TELEC Sports Club was started in the year 1973 with a view to provide opportunities to the employees and their families to hone their sporting skills. They laid down the foundation for all tournaments which had an additional benefit of developing inter-divisional relationships for finer working environment.
